Formula 1 has been racing since 1950, long enough for some genuinely strange things to happen. Here are five that sound invented.
1. A Grand Prix that lasted one lap
Heavy rain at Spa in 2021 meant the Belgian Grand Prix was only ever run behind the safety car. After two laps it was stopped for good, and the result was taken from the end of lap one.
At 6.880 km, it is the shortest race in the championship's history. Max Verstappen was declared the winner, and everyone scored half points.
2. A race with six cars
Twenty cars lined up for the 2005 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis. Fourteen of them pulled into the pits after the formation lap.
Their tyre supplier, Michelin, said its tyres were not safe through the banked final corner, and no compromise was reached. Only the six cars on Bridgestone tyres took the start.
3. India's first points came from that race
One of those six cars was a Jordan driven by Narain Karthikeyan, India's first Formula 1 driver.
He started 19th and finished fourth, scoring five points: India's first in the sport.
4. Force India's best day was at Spa
In 2009, Force India had never started from pole or finished on the podium. At the Belgian Grand Prix, Giancarlo Fisichella did both.
He put the car on pole and finished second, just behind Kimi Räikkönen's Ferrari.
5. The half point that is still a record
Lella Lombardi finished sixth at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. The race was stopped early, so only half points were awarded.
Her half point still makes her the only woman to have scored in the World Championship.
Race it on Late Brake
Two of these stories happened at Spa-Francorchamps, one of six real circuits in Late Brake. Take on Eau Rouge, set a lap and race your own ghost, free in your browser.
